Thomas Kinkade

Victorian Autumn

The painting Victorian Autumn, is a world of imagination and inspiration. Many of Thomas Kinkade’s paintings are a symbol of silent messengers in the home. They bring a message of peace, joy, hope, and inspiration. They are a reminder that God loves us and that the world is a beautiful place, and a celebration of simpler ways of living.

Victorian Autumn is the first autumn subject featuring a Victorian house that he has done in quite some time. This is the largest Victorian painting he has ever done and as such it has as much detail as any Victorian subject he has ever done, probably more detail. Each flower, each leaf, each and every spindle on the porch was detailed. You can only imagine the countless hours he spent mixing several colors and brushing color back and forth to get the painting to be so faultless.

Victorian Autumn began as a plein air painting done in the charming Victorian village of Cape May, New Jersey. Thom has painted in Cape May before but this is the first studio subject based on Cape May entirely. Based on the end result Thomas Kinkade should be very proud of his endeavor. Thomas was able to capture that phase in the year when its late summer early autumn and you can see the fall colors beginning to really radiate and yet you can see there’s still the fading blooms of summer.

There is a sense of enchantedness and detail of the Victorian house. The longer he worked on the painting the more touches he added to make every detail perfect. A great example is the flag that is hung from the porch, and in the distance you can see the garden pathways leading you, who knows where, into secluded places unknown.

The lights on Victorian Autumn are dramatic, of course we have the glow of the late afternoon sky, but then we have the days of light, where you see all the soft little splashes of sunlight that go in the distance. As you dim the lights on the painting you will see those radiant touches more strongly. The color composition in this painting is very complex and took some great thinking. You can see how he brought in the blue tones wherever he could. As a extra touch he even painted the shudders blue, just to give it one more touch of blue that would serve as an accent.

Thomas has always shared his excitement on painting cats. He has a great group of models that live in his neighborhood. They will often walk by his studio and trot along the lawn. A cat makes a nice touch in a composition, it reminds you to patiently slow down and enjoy the scene you are seeing. Cats never seem to be in a hurry. There are also a few pumpkins scattered about the composition as a reminder that fall is on its way.

The layers of foliage are so detailed in the painting. There are trees that stand in front of the Victorian, surround the Victorian, and go off into the distance, and have other
layers of foliage over grown upon those trees. Then you have the ground cover and other areas that all seem to blend in to what seems like an endless organized chaos. Its as if all the plants all got together and grew into there own wonderful interaction.

The colors people are using in there homes today will make this painting really appropriate for any setting. There are a lot of mauve tones, there are rich burgundy tones, and the blue accents of course are wonderful additions to the color pallet, and the pinks and velvety lavender tones. Colors that people enjoy seeing also excite the eye of an artist. An artist is drawn to color the way a sculpture is drawn to clay, they like to get there hands into it and use color in a way that dramatizes the subject and yet also draws you in.

This is truly a mood painting. There is a softness and a since of quiet, we need extra quiet in our lives today. There is something about Victorian houses that are very majestic and yet inviting. You feel you could sit on the front porch and be at peace. All the lights are lit up in the home and of course you have the sense that it’s a big home and a big family lives there.
